What others say....

Firey, Agile and passionate, multi-instrumentalist Clarence Ward III’s heartfelt, soulful music stands as an anchor of the Baltimore music scene. The minute you hear the crisp, agile wail of his trumpet, his playful sincerity of his sax or his warm and powerful flugelhorn you're frozen, mesmerized, until he's said his piece. Clarence doesn’t just play the notes, he lives them, and you are helpless to avoid the way it vibrates through your chest cavity and breaks you open to the world and it’s complexity. He’s a storyteller, a guardian of jazz music today.” - Theresa Sise

Baltimore trumpeter, saxophonist and jazz organizer Clarence Ward III plays in a vast range, sometimes switching between horns mid-solo, shrieking out like Albert Ayler one minute and blowing cool and calm like Roy Hargrove the next. He plays what he calls “feel good” music and leads his band Dat Feel Good. You have to hear and feel this band lI've

One wonders how Baltimorean saxophonist Clarence Ward III would feel about being compared to the old old school masters. Perhaps it’s unfair; certainly it’s incomplete. There’s no disputing that he’s got considerable bebop-and-everything-after powers in his language and his blowing. But ohhh, there’s quite a bit of Coleman Hawkins, Ben Webster, Chu Berry, and a smack of Lester Young in there as well. If there were one specific saxophonist that stood in good analogy to Ward, it might be Joe Lovano, one of the living grand masters of the tenor tradition who, like Ward, has absorbed the whole history of the instrument into his artistry. But it might be more fitting to say that his sound is timeless, and simply leave it at that. Well, no, don’t leave it at that. Go see him!
